The image above was created through the experimentation of lighting using lamps, softboxes and flash.  The basic idea for the composition was contrast and using negative space with harsh light to highlight how this can alter mood.  We can see in the image above the subjects face is half hidden through directional lighting and is looking straight at the camera suggesting the subject is confident.  In contrast the image underneath has a much softer lighting and although compositionally is similar (but with less negative space) the overall mood is much softer created by the subject looking down and away from the camera. The framing of both images also plays a big part in how the viewer sees the subjects within the Images, for example the subject in the image underneath fills more of the frame and is much more intimate.

The image above focuses less on the relationship of the subject and viewer and more on composition and form. The subject has the head slightly tipped back elongating the shape of the head, the identity is hidden from us through negative spacing and lighting and a profile image.

The Images above and below were taken to explore slow shutter speed and capturing movement.  The image above is displayed in a series to highlight the idea of passing through time. The image below, also from the same shoot has a very different visual effect. Firstly, the colours are much darker and heavier, the image above in contrast has a much lighter feel created by the background and colours used in the lighting. Secondly, the image below, compositionally is different and seems to be frozen in time but still shows the technical movement. I find this image intriguing because to me the subject is looking down and appears to be in thought this thought seems to have materialised behind her.

The thought behind this image was to capture a perspective rarely looked at through the use of low vantage point.

This images above and below were inspired by Ernst Haas who did a series of work looking at the world reflected taken in New York City, USA, 1952. These two images were my initial response to the ideas generated from researching the artist,In the image below I developed the idea further on Photoshop CS6 by duplicating the image to create a second layer, after doing so I layered the first ontop of the new layer but   moving it slightly to create a complex composition. This also created a difference to the photograph through leading lines. In the middle of the image I tried to capture a line of reflection to show the same image twice.I have presented the photo in black and white to emphasize the geometric shapes created within the images. The image above is a non manipulated image of a straight reflection it has been presented upside down to show the distortion of the reflected world.

The ideas of the images below were formed from the concept of non- verbal communication for example body language and facial expression. The images shown are sign language one of the main non-verbal communication forms for people with hard of hearing. As this is a visual language I thought it would be interesting to capture in photography. Layering the photos on top of each other’s expresses the idea of speaking and the confusion of hearing people may find when seeing this form of communication. The image below is presented in a series and spells the word sound again exploring the idea of non-verbal communications.

These photographs were created to further explore my ideas on non-verbal communication, based on the work of Arnulf Rainers reworked photographs, I wanted to further investigate mood and expression by getting my subject to think about shape and space and the movements the body can create whilst doing so. The expressive use of paint and brush strokes adds to the expression and movement in the image.

Developing on from ideas of non-verbal communication I did a shoot based around observing peoples body language without their knowledge. This shoot was achieved by taking photographs of people through bus windows the image clearly shows through non-verbal communication, the anxiety of the man sitting on the bus. Assumptions can be made of the man’s life his worries without knowing anything about him. Composition is frame dividing the image emphasizing looking through a window and into somebody’s life.

The two images below were taken in the morning, I was taken aback by the lighting and early morning mist. The images present a calming and tranquil affect due to colour suggesting a stillness and atmosphere.

This photograph was captured in London on a busy morning, using a long exposure I captured the movement showing the pace of London life how fast people move. In the centre of the photograph there are two men dressed smartly and we can assume from this they are on their way to work, this is what attracted me to take the image and remains the main focal point to the audience.
